Mitchum S. T. Rodgell

My bicycle is a thing of beauty. Its intricate workings transform the power of my legs into forward motion to coast over hills and valleys with great efficiency. It is a wonder that God ever allowed man the knowledge to make such a device, it was never His duty nor His concern. I welcome it, as a gift from Above, and it is kept under strong lock.

It could just as well have been any other day. I may never have had a bike nor the legs to drive it, nor the intellect to understand it, nor the imagination to appreciate it. I feel an intimate connection to the bike as it and I become one to conquer the roads ahead. I know how to keep it under good repair. I need a bicycle to transport my ecclesiastical widgets as I make my long business trips. If you have understood my argument to this point, then you will of course understand the widgets.

Consider them! Spinning, flying, teaching, sheltering, revealing, shocking, preaching, and feeding. Every one of considerate comfort in life, every one to bring the ways of God closer to man. It is that which is wanted: the unification of spiritual with temporal, using that which is beneficial in current life to refine our ways in keeping with eternal Good. One makes you glad, another to prove God to your friend. They come in all shapes, all sizes! This one heals, this one bleeds! Come see the collection and build your own. These books will show you how. It is eternity in a snailshell. Sixty-six books in a slogan. This has been my life for twenty-five years; I labor for the Lord. Immeasurable value to myself as well as purchaser. Call one your own, such requires small price!

They all ride with me on my bicycle, taking whatever hospitality I can get as I travel the back roads of New England. I think it is the people who make these trips worthwhile. This is how I met Heinrich Schwartzfuss and his wife, the incomparable Olga. Let me take a break in this narrative, however, to recall one of the more particular nights I spent at a host's house:

This was just last winter, or perhaps the one before, so I'm not reaching back and beating completely dead memories. I however, do find it somewhat amusing, so you'll have to forgive the momentary distraction, I know the purpose of this writing is for the Ziegensaft fan club to publish a small booklet describing the annual retreat. I will get to that soon enough, I am having enough fun right now after I got this old typewriter cleaned up, and it is simply amazing… so I go on at length. I used to type alot, and this brought back some old memories for me. To the point -

It was a very cold January night, snowing and approaching 5 or 6 o'clock, so I was both cold, tired, and hungry. [etc…]
